I have had the last couple days off. I’m working an island shift this Sunday and then I’m back to being off again for another four days. I honestly don’t mind working schedules like this. It feels more manageable to me than working three 12 hour shifts in a row.
I’ve been doing some thinking about this trip home for the holidays. Things have just started to level out for me financially after my initial paycheck disruption at the beginning of September. And now looking at the big picture, taking a month off between my next contract really doesn’t make sense for me.
I’m disappointed. But honestly, feeling a little disappointment will be better for me in the long run than continuing to feel stuck playing catch up. I’ve done a lot of thinking. A lot of writing, planning, calculating. Just trying to come up with some kind of road map for me in the coming months to make next year feel a little easier.
And step one is taking another contract as soon as I can. Just continuing the cash flow without having any kind of disruption. Paying off debt. Building my emergency savings back to a healthy amount. All the things that will put me in a much better position this time next year. I’m just glad I have a job that affords me the luxury to work contracts like this.
I talked to my brother about not coming home. He wasn’t upset. He was more encouraging than anything. Just letting me know that they can always come down to see me rather than me feeling like I have to make the trip home to see them. That made me feel better about all of this. I know my family will always support me.
I knew when I took this contract that the time was going to fly by. It amazes me that I only have four more weeks left of work and then I’m done. This is the first time I’ve ever done anything like this and I really enjoyed it. The short term commitment, not feeling obligated to stay somewhere and knowing I was leaving soon helped me with not feeling burnt out.
So now it’s just a matter of preparing myself for the next thing. A new contract somewhere else. I will probably stay internal and take a contract with the same company, just at a different site. That way I don’t have to go through any of the onboarding stuff and all my information is already up to date.
Tonight while I’m at work I will take the time to hash out a lot more of the details. Probably look at the posted positions online to get an idea of where I’m headed next. I’m officially month-month on my lease which makes things a little easier too. Not that I’m moving anywhere immediately, but it is one less thing I have to worry about being tied down to in case a new opportunity arises.
Until then, I’ll just keep on keeping on.
Thanks for reading.
