  • Freudian – 9/19/2026.
It’s been really nice having the last couple of days off. Things have been really slow. I spent today taking it easy. In the morning I went and got breakfast and ate it at the park like I usually do. I got some groceries. Made it home before the rain started in the afternoon. And… Read more: Freudian – 9/19/2026.
  • Momentum – 9/17/2026.
I finished my last shift of this big stretch this morning. I worked six out of the last seven days, last night being a night shift, and today I’m feeling pretty depleted. I’m just going to order in, do laundry, some light stretching and exercise, and watch TV tonight. I got paid today. The payment… Read more: Momentum – 9/17/2026.
  • Hurdle – 9/14/2026.
Have you ever had an experience where you were so close to accomplishing something but then you have a setback that pushes your goal just a little further away? That’s how I’m feeling right now. • Control – 9/1/2026.
Today is my first shift at the new job. I actually got really lucky with my schedule. • Start – 8/25/2026.
I just finished two days of onboarding at my new job. It was just like any other first day at a new facility. • Act – 7/15/2026.
It’s been another slow couple of days off. I went to the lake today and spent some time on the water in my kayak. I felt guilty sitting inside when it was clear skies and 90 degrees outside. Getting through these flip-flop shifts this week. Another weekend of work. This weekend doesn’t feel as heavy. I don’t know if that’s because the weather has been really nice this week or if I’m turning a corner. Regardless, I hope the weeks to come start to feel as steady as this one does. I saw my ex at work last night. We… Read more: Headlights – 2/28/2026.

Growing up my Dad had this newspaper cut out taped to his desk that served as his daily motivation as he navigated raising two kids and providing for our family. It said something along the lines of “life is easier when you’ve got a lot of monies”.

Similarly, I framed a dollar bill a couple years ago and have been keeping it with me. Even when I moved states here to Colorado. I wrote on it in black permanent marker. It says “a dollar for when things don’t make cents”.

Obviously a play on words, but it has served as my own reminder. Just like my Dad’s little newspaper cut out, it calls back to the truth that life is a lot easier when you have the money to do what you want.

That’s kind of how I feel now that I’m a couple weeks into this contract. It’s been a while since I have not felt crushed by the constant cycle of bills that take money out of my account every month. Now I get to see my savings grow and don’t have to worry about making $40 dollars get me by between paychecks.

That’s not to say I’m still not still very aware of making sure I don’t start creating financial problems for myself again. But I’ve at least regained some agency with being able to fill my gas tank every week and not keep myself at home just because I couldn’t afford to waste the fuel.

It gives me a chance to live a little again. I’ve been watching the leaves change all around me here in Colorado. The most beautiful times of the year with all the colors of Autumn. I definitely need to get out in the next couple weeks and take it all in.

I’m proud of myself for enduring the last year. Even though sitting here, staring over at my framed dollar bill I don’t feel completely fixed. But I’m at least moving forward in the right direction.

I work a night shift tonight. Then I have some days off. I made some plans to get dinner with someone tomorrow. I’m trying to get myself back out there and make some new connections.

Not because I’m looking to fill a void or that I’m trying grab ahold of the future I had envisioned for myself here in Colorado before it slipped away. But because I need to start feeling human again. And living involves feeling the good things too. Not just the bad.

Thanks for reading.

  1. I have just stumbled across your blog, but this piece is so…I’m not so sure of the word, emphatic? The importance of this framed note is very well-expressed. And all the meaning it carries for you, including the link to your father. I really hope you get to enjoy the Colorado outdoors and make those new connections!
